Click! Click! Click! Did you roll your mouse over the clicks? Ahhh the sound of the mouse clicking away. What a very familiar sound in the office and at home these days.

Looking at computer short cuts, the mouse has several sub-menus that pop-up when right clicked. The mouse menus covered in this E-tip are related to the Microsoft Windows environment. Also we’ll touch base on a couple of shortcuts in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.

When I had discovered these short cuts they revolutionized my world! I never used my computer the same way again, and wonder how I survived without knowing these shortcuts. You’ll find that these tips can save oodles of time and help to get rid of the Techie headaches. [A term I have come to know all too well]

Computer Shortcuts

• Copy & Paste Text: this is #1 on the list. I recently had a client say, “Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” To be honest I never thought about it. I now receive emails with all kinds of things that my client has copied and then pasted into them. Okay here's how to go about it.
  
  
  • Move your mouse pointer to the left of the text on a page and left click. The cursor is now blinking at that point.
    
  • Hold down the left button of your mouse and pull down until the text is highlighted that you would like to copy.
    
  • Let go of the button and the text should stay highlighted. If not repeat steps 1 & 2.
    
  • Move the mouse arrow over the highlighted area once again and right click. [Here is your mouse sub-menu] Scroll down and click on Copy.
    
  • The text is now stored on your computers Clipboard, kind of like a sticky note. It can be pasted in an email, to Notepad or in an MS Word document. Let’s paste our text in an email. The area where you begin typing your email is where you will paste the text that is on the Clipboard.
    
    
    • Right click
      
    • Scroll down to the word Paste and click
      
    • Now the text is pasted in your email
      Once you get the hang of it, you will love this feature!
  
  
  NOTE: Always assume a click means the left button on your mouse unless specified otherwise.
  
  
• Save As: I venture to a lot of sites that offer free graphics for public use. Be careful when copying any graphics because of copyright laws. Graphic artists work very hard on their graphics. Please be sure to read their policies before using their graphics. Here's a great site for Holiday graphics. An email can be jazzed up, your Holiday Newletters or in my case this E-tip.
  
  
  • choose a graphic from one of the pages
    
  • right click on the graphical image
    
  • scroll down on your sub-menu to Save Picture As, click
    
  • My Documents opens click Save or at the bottom in the File Name box, you can type a name for your graphic image
    
  • click Save
    
  
  
• Searches: My favorite search engine is Google. You can download the Google Tool Bar for FREE. This tool bar will always be at the top of Internet Explorer for easy access. This saves a couple of steps and also has some great features attached to it. There are the page ranking buttons, and also voting buttons to easily vote for a website. Look at past searches you have done. Other Google searches are a mouse click away right on the tool bar such as; Froogle, News, Images and Groups.



• Add to Favorites/Bookmark page: Organizing your Favorite websites into folders is a good idea. Creating a new folder called Holidays is fairly simple.
  
  
  • find a holiday site to save - you can use this one: Christmas graphics
    
  • click on Favorites at the top
    
  • click Add to Favorites
    
  • click on the New Folder button
    
  • type in the name Holidays and then click OK
    
  • the new folder name Holidays is now highlighted, click the OK button at the top
    
  
  
  Your new website find is now listed in the Holidays folder. If you find another holiday website that you like, just click on your Favorites, scroll down to the Holidays folder, click on the word Holidays and then click the OK button and you’re all set.
  
  
• Highlight text and Print: Is there a portion of text that you would like to print out? The mouse sub-menu comes in handy for this one.
  
  • highlight some text on a web page [refer back to the copy & paste at the top if needed]
    
  • right click on highlighted text, click on Print
    
  • under Page Range, click Selection
    
  • click Apply and Print
